Patriots Battle But Fall in Finals
A season to remember came to a close on Friday, November 4th under the lights at Spencerport as Penfield was edged by Webster Schroeder in the Section V Class AAA championship match, 1-0. The only goal of the match came shortly after the opening whistle when All-America candidate Anthony Rozzano broke through alone on Pats' goalkeeper Dan Lynd and tucked the ball into the lower left corner of the net. It took a few minutes to overcome the stunning start, but Penfield systematically took over play for most of the first half. Excellent scoring chances were just missed, saved, or hitting the crossbar, and the first half closed 1-0. "I knew our character would overcome that very early goal," said Penfield Coach John Butterworth, "but I was worried a bit when all of the pressure we applied came up empty at halftime. Nobody else all year put Schroeder under the stress we applied in this match. It's just unfortunate we couldn't get the bounce we needed." The Patriots played with a sense of urgency from the start of the second period and moved to a 3-1-3-3 with twelve minutes to play, but never did manage to put one into the net. "We did a lot of great things this season," added Butterworth. "Our goaltending and team defending were nothing short of phenomenal all season long. Our senior leadership and daily approach to training made this a really fun bunch of people to spend so much time with. The coaching staff enjoyed the quality of character as much as the quality of play this year. It was a season to remember."
The Warriors and Patriots entered the contest ranked 9th and 11th in New York State. They were first and second in the local poll. Webster moved on to the state qualifier against Spencerport with a 17-1-1 mark, and Penfield closed out 2011 with a record of 16-3-0. The Patriots posted 13 shutouts and were the only team to defeat Schroeder this season. The teams split regular season matches with a pair of 1-0 scores. 2011 Season Updates:
Monday, August 29 Scrimmage at Greece Arcadia: The Patriots emerged with a clean sheet despite utilizing a new system for the first time and having many new faces on the 26-man roster. Seniors Matt McLaughlin and Zach Andrews scored and Captain Dan Lynd and sophomore Evan Orlando shared 5 saves for the shutout.
Thursday, September 1 Scrimmage at Greece Athena: Captain Paul Lentine headed in a first half corner kick from senior Kurt Pruner and Captain Austin Bartlett kept the backfield organized against the Trojan speed in another 2-0 preseason tuneup.
Tuesday, September 6 @ Canandaigua: 2-1 Win: The Pats outshot CA by a 21-4 margin and held a corner kicks advantage of 11-1 but had to hang on for the opening season win. A goal by senior Matt McLaughlin just 3:59 into the match set the tone, but Penfield couldn't fully shake their hosts due to many missed scoring chances. Captain Paul Lentine's goal with about 15 minutes left proved to be the winner. Sophomore Evan Orlando and senior Kurt Pruner registered assists.
Thursday, September 8 @ Webster Schroeder: 0-1 Loss: The matchup between the #1 Warriors and the #4 Patriots lived up to its billing. The only goal of the match came on a muffed back-ball in an otherwise very well-played game. Captain Dan Lynd made 6 saves for Penfield.
Saturday, September 10 @ Brighton: 1-0 Win: Captain Ben Swanger dropped a pass back to junior midfielder Christian Amering for the only goal of the match. The goal came just 13:24 into the game and the defensive corps of Cory Terwilliger, captain Austin Bartlett, Evan Orlando, Eddie Doyle, and Zach Andrews made it stand up. Captain Dan Lynd made four saves for the shutout.
Monday, September 12 v. Webster Thomas: 3-0 Win: Three second-half goals in an eight minute period propelled the Patriots to the victory in their first home match of the season. Senior Captain Paul Lentine tallied twice in a 47-second blitz to give Penfield control of the match, and senior Matt McLaughlin headed home a corner kick just 7 minutes later to put the match out of reach. Captain Ben Swanger assisted on the first goal and senior Kurt Pruner set up the second one. Senior Captain Dan Lynd made five saves for the shutout and senior Zach Andrews got the assist on the final goal.
Friday, September 16, 2011 @ Rush-Henrietta: 3-0 Win: The Patriots parlayed a 1-0 halftime lead into a 3-0 win at R-H with a dominant second half effort. Dan Lynd made five saves for Penfield's third straight shutout and seniors Austin Bartlett, Cory Terwilliger, and Zach Andrews keyed the defensive effort. Christian Amering volleyed a beauty in from 40 yards and Matt McLaughlin and Paul Lentine tallied second half goals to assure the victory. Assists were registered by Ben Swanger and Eddie Doyle, and senior midfielder Kurt Pruner had a strong match on the flanks.
Tuesday, September 20 @ Fairport: 1-0 Win: Sophomore Evan Orlando headed home a corner kick by Paul Lentine in the 13th minute for the only goal of the contest. Dan Lynd was clean off the line for Penfield, cutting out the constant air service and long balls that are part of the direct play of the Red Raiders. The Patriots registered their fourth shutout in a row, and it was the fourth consecutive shutout of Fairport over the past two seasons.
Thursday, September 22 v. Irondequoit: 3-2 Win: Senior midfielder Kurt Pruner took a pass from Paul Lentine and sent the winning goal to the left side of the net from 15 yards to pull out the win against a strong Eagles side that had entered the match with a 6-1-0 record. Matt McLaughlin set up the first two Patriots goals and Paul Lentine and Ben Swanger also scored for the hosts. Sophomore Evan Orlando filled in admirably for injured GK Dan Lynd and defender Cory Terwilliger had another standout effort. Penfield is 6-1-0 heading into Monday night's 6:30 match at Victor.
Monday, September 26, 2011 @ Victor: Matt McLaughlin took a through ball from Kurt Pruner and scored the match's only goal just fifteen minutes into play. Despite at least 8 strong scoring chances the Pats needed their fifth shutout in eight games to secure the result. Dan Lynd returned after a one game absence and made four saves.
Saturday, October 1 v. Canandaigua, Homecoming: 4-0 Win: Paul Lentine had a goal and an assist, and Matt McLaughlin, Ben Swanger, and Christian Amering also scored as the Patriots took a 2-0 halftime lead at Homecoming and parlayed it into a 4-0 victory. Zach Andrews, Evan Orlando, and Kurt Pruner added assists and Dan Lynd had to make just one save for Penfield's sixth shutout.
Tuesday, October 4 v. Webster Schroeder: 1-0 Win: Stout defending and exceptional goaltending helped the Matt McLaughlin goal with 14 minutes to play stand up as the Patriots knocked off the Warriors. Paul Lentine set up the goal with a cross from the left flank for a header from 16 yards and Dan Lynd made 9 saves for Penfield's 7th shutout in 10 matches. Standout defensive efforts from Zach Andrews, Cory Terwilliger, Eddie Doyle, and Austin Bartlett helped keep the dangerous Warriors off the scoreboard. Schroeder entered the match ranked fourth in New York State while the Pats were rated 14th. The loss was Schroeder's first and the Penfield win avenged the only loss for the Patriots, a 1-0 setback in game 2. Penfield is 9-1-0, Schroeder 9-1-1.
Saturday, October 8 @ Webster Thomas: 0-1 Loss: A hungry Titans team came out in their homecoming match and outworked and outplayed the Patriots. Penfield played too much of the match in the air and never really took control of the game for any extended period of time. A flurry of pressure late didn't yield the tying goal.
Monday, October 10 v. Wayne: 3-0 Win: In a strong bounce-back effort the Patriots parlayed a 1-0 halftime lead into a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes to play, allowing all 25 Pats substantial playing time. Paul Lentine's 45-yard frozen rope to the upper right hand corner stunned the Eagles with 15 minutes remaining in the first period. Ben Swanger assisted. Two minutes into the second half Zach Andrews put a Matt McLaughlin pass off a dead ball into the left side netting to increase the lead, and Christian Amering headed home another McLaughlin assist to close out the scoring. Keith Langdon and Jon Spaan were exceptional off the bench for Penfield.
Wednesday, October 12 v. Rush-Henrietta: 1-0 Win: Christian Amering scored from 18 yards off the right post seven minutes into the second half, and the Patriots made it stand up in their ninth shutout of the season. Matt McLaughlin assisted on the goal and Dan Lynd made a couple of big stops at the other end of the field. Austin Bartl and Isiah Warner provided solid play off the bench at the outside midfield.
Friday, October 14 v. Fairport: 1-0 Win: Ben Swanger converted a free kick from Evan Orlando and the Patriot team defending shutout Fairport for the fifth consecutive time over the past two seasons. Dan Lynd made three saves and the defending corps of Austin Bartlett, Evan Orlando, Eddie Doyle, Cory Terwilliger, Zach Andrews, and Keith Langdon put out a clean effort against a direct and physical Red Raider team. Kurt Pruner put in a nice effort up and down the touchline for Penfield, now 12-2-0.
Tuesday, October 18 @ Irondequoit: 1-0 Win: Zach Andrews sprinted down the touchline and sent a ball across the box that Paul Lentine continued to Matt McLaughlin for the only goal of a well-played contest. The Patriot defenders and midfield were solid again and Dan Lynd made five saves for the 11th shutout of the season. It was a battle between Section V defending champions, Irondequoit in Class AA and Penfield in AAA.
Thursday, October 2o v. Victor: 4-0 Win: The Patriots stood up to the stiff wind in a scoreless first half, then exploded for four goals in a 12 minute span of the second period on Senior Day. Kurt Pruner got the first two just three minutes apart and Paul Lentine and Ben Swanger added the other goals on the way to Penfield's 12th shutout of the season. Jordan Wolf factored in on two of the goals and Dan Lynd registered Section V's lowest goals-against average for 2011, and the solid defending corps built another brick wall in front of him.
Friday, October 28 v. Monroe-Edison: 3-0 Win: The hosts jumped onto the scoredboard in the second minute when Matt McLaughlin sent a serve onto the head of Ben Swanger and the Pats added a second goal by McLaughlin just eleven minutes later. McLaughlin set up Christian Amering in the second half to finalize the scoring in the Section V Class AAA Quarterfinal contest. The back four was solid and the goaltending of Dan Lynd and Mitch Standera helped the Patriots to their 13th shutout on the season. Keith Langdon was exceptional off the bench for Penfield, who have reached the sectional semifinals for the 25th time in the last 27 seasons.
Tuesday, November 1 v. Rush-Henrietta: 2-1 Win: Despite a dominating performance in a match that witnessed a 19-2 shot advantage and a 7-1 corner kick advantage, it took an overtime penalty kick conversion by Paul Lentine to secure the victory and a return to the Section V AAA Championship match. Evan Orlando evened it up on a Christian Amering assist following a corner kick and the Patriots spent large portions of the match in the upper half of the field. Penfield will face Webster Schroeder on Friday night at Spencerport in a rematch of last year's title game.
Friday, November 4 v. Webster Schroeder:0-1 Loss:Full Summary Above
JV Team Update: The Junior Patriots defeated Victor by a 2-1 score and climbed to the .500 mark after a slow start to the season. The win helped them finish 6-6-4.
Frosh Complete Solid Season: The Penfield freshman team downed HF-L to finish their season with a record of 8-3-1.
Top Honor for Josh BoltonPenfield All-American Josh Bolton '02 (photo left, along with Coach Steitz and Coach Butterworth) has been selected as one of just four players in the inaugural class of the Section V Soccer Hall of Fame inducted on November 10th. The four-year varsity player who helped the Patriots to three Section V titles and our first New York State Championship, went on to All-America honors at Williams College and played professionally with the Rochester Rhinos and Atlanta Silverbacks. Josh was joined by Dema Kovalenko of Greece Arcadia, Jeff Parrinello of Pittsford Mendon, and Dana Quick of Spencerport as the first class of honorees. Kovalenko and Quick both played for Coach Butterworth in the Empire State Games. Being one of the first four inducted in Section V is especially impressive given the fact that so many thousands of kids have played in our Section over so many decades. Josh was also twice All-State and twice AGR 1st team at PHS, and went on to be the two-time Conference Player of the Year and twice was Academic All-America at Williams.
